Bio
I wrote my first story when I was eight years old. I called it "The Super Food Friends," and it centered around the adventures of several anthropomorphized vegetables and fruits as they battled crime. It was written for the "Young Writers' Contest," a Canton City Schools (Ohio) program which encouraged 3rd through 6th graders to write, illustrate, and bind their own books. I won first place with it, but more importantly I found what I wanted to do with my life.
Now, 24 years later, I've earned a Bachelor's of Arts in English and a minor in Writing from Kent State University. I published a short story for the first time three months ago, and now I've published my first novel. It's all coming together.
The way to get here has been a long, weird road. It took me to Taiwan, where I taught English for a while. There were four years where it led me through an enlistment in the Marine Corps, and all the debauchery and craziness that that entails. I even followed it down a dark path that took me to prison for a year and a half, through some of the worst parts of my life. I managed to father three kids along the way, marry a couple different women, and I nursed one hell of a drinking problem.
That's where my writing comes from; the weird years, the times and experiences that have indelibly stamped themselves upon me. These are the works of who I am.
